OpenVPN startup Windows Vista and 7
This is common tutorial how to configure OpenVPN to automatically connect on system boot for Windows XP, Vista and 7
Make sure you configure OpenVPN and its working.
The Windows installer will set up a Service Wrapper, but leave it turned off by default. We need enable OpenVPN service and set Startup Type to Automatic. This will configure the service for automatic start on the next reboot.
1) Open Control Panel -> Administrative Tools

2) Find and open Services

3) Find OpenVPN Service, right mouse click and Properties

4) Set Startup type to Automatic

When you started computer, the OpenVPN Service Wrapper will scan the \Program Files\OpenVPN\config ( for 64 bit OS \Program Files(x86)\OpenVPN\config ) folder for .ovpn configuration files and starting a separate OpenVPN process on each file.
Once OpenVPN started as a service on Windows, the only way to control it is in Services, right mouse click on OpenVPN service and it gives start/stop control.

Hi!
Is there something interesting?
Thank you! This help me.
hey i am a newbee..My problem is that openvpn tunnels every traffic through it..which prevents my client to login to my internet provider. As they keep track of it so i am kicked out evertime, after few minutes of starting the vpn. How can i prevent it from tunneling the local traffic.
Nice tutorial! It works, but, now there is no icon in the system tray so how will I know if the vpn server is down and I’m no longer connected?
Why doesn’t it work to just put a shortcut to the OpenVPN executable in the Windows Startup folder?
Actually, this is what I’ve tried to do, and after startup there is definitely an OpenVPN process running, but the icon is missing from the notification area. That’s why I went looking, and came upon this blog.
D
never tested with Win 8, will take a loot in near future and update blog with details
This starts up the OpenVPN server, doesn’t it? I just need the client to start up. Can you confirm?
